Periodontal Treatment

Gum disease is more than just irritated or bleeding gums. It’s a serious condition that threatens your oral health and general wellness. At Dr. Michael Hoang's dental office in Hawthorne, CA, we understand the critical role healthy gums play. We offer services to help you maintain gum health and tailor periodontal treatment if it should develop.

The Importance of Healthy Gums

Healthy gums hold your teeth securely in place and protect them from harmful bacteria. When gum disease is left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and has also been linked to health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease.

Why Your Gum Health Matters

When we think about health, our teeth and gums may not be the first thing to come to mind. Maintaining healthy gums is essential to your oral and overall health.

Healthier Teeth

Along with your jawbone, your gums support your teeth. Having good oral health means healthy gums and disease-free teeth.

Healthier Body

Gum disease is directly related to many systemic issues, such as heart health, lung health, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Better Breath

The smell of gum disease is unmistakable. Treating the underlying infection will help improve your breath over time.

Dr. Hoang gave me the best patient care and experience I have had from a dentist!

Best friendliest, family dentist in the South Bay!! Dr. Hoang is great, quick, and efficient with his work! I came in for my general cleaning and walked out with brand new clean teeth and new tooth-colored fillings! Dr. Hoang gave me the best patient care and experience I have had from a dentist! He really took his time with the consultation part of my visit: explaining treatment options for my teeth and what I can do moving forward to protect my teeth long term. Thank you, Dr. Hoang!

How Gum Disease Develops

Gum disease starts with plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. Without proper oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings, plaque hardens into tartar, which leads to gum inflammation and infection. Here are some common symptoms of gum disease to watch out for:

  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
  • Receding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose teeth

If you notice any of these symptoms, please call Dr. Mike to schedule a checkup to see how we can help you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a common condition affecting the gums and bones supporting your teeth. It begins with plaque buildup along and under the gum line. If you don’t remove plaque with consistent brushing and flossing, you can develop an infection that damages the gum and supporting bone structure, eventually leading to tooth loss.

Gum Disease Treatment in Hawthorne, CA

Gum disease typically progresses from gingivitis, a mild form of gum inflammation, to more severe forms known as periodontitis. Dr. Mike offers several effective gum disease treatments, including:

  • Professional Cleaning — For early stages of gum disease, such as gingivitis, regular professional cleanings can help remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing at home can't manage.
  • Scaling and Root Planing — During this deep cleaning, Dr. Mike carefully scrapes away tartar (scaling) above and below the gumline. He also smooths rough spots on the tooth root (planing) to remove bacteria and provide a clean surface for the gums to reattach to the teeth.
  • Medications — Dr. Mike may recommend antimicrobial mouth rinses or antibiotics to help control infection and inflammation associated with gum disease.
  • Surgical Treatments — For advanced stages of periodontitis, surgical treatments may be necessary.

Stages of Gum Disease

Early Stage: Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease, and the most common symptoms are bleeding or swollen gums. If Dr. Mike detects gingivitis, he will thoroughly clean your teeth to remove plaque and tartar. He will also guide you on improving your oral hygiene routine to maintain gum health and prevent the disease from returning.

Advanced Stage: Periodontitis

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis or advanced gum disease. During this stage, pockets open between the teeth and gums, allowing bacteria to collect and attack the bone and tissues that support teeth. Without ongoing treatment, teeth will loosen and eventually need to be removed.

Periodontitis treatment typically involves scaling and root planing, a more in-depth cleaning to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline. Periodontitis cannot be cured, but it can be managed with consistent care to prevent it from worsening.
